It was wonderful to have so many parents come in to 1G and share our poetry afternoon with us. We enjoyed preparing for it and we were very excited to read our poems out loud.
Here are some of the poems that we wrote.
Wednesday 12th July 2017 - Poetry Afternoon. 2.45pm in the Year 1 classrooms.
Thursday 13th July 2017 - Swimming. Parents welcome to come along and watch. Please see list outside classroom to find out the exact time that your child swims. Our slot is from 2.15pm-3.15pm.
Monday 17th July 2017 - Please send a large plastic bag in with your child this week as we will be sending books and work home.
Design Technology Day - children to bring in small junk modelling materials e.g. cardboard tubes, yogurt pots etc.
Tuesday 18th July 2017 - Extra swimming lesson for 1G. Please send your child's swim kit into school.
Friday 21st July 2017 - Whole School Breakfast on the field. Children to bring in some breakfast to eat alongside their class e.g. chopped fruit, pastry, dry cereal etc.
Afternoon - Class Party. Children to bring in a snack to eat during the party. This just needs to be a small individual snack. It is not to share with the class.
In Maths this week we have been learning about capacity. We have explored the concept using lots of different size containers and water. We have been using words such as empty, full and litres. We have also been predicting how many cups of water will fill different containers.
It has been very messy but we have been able to work outside in the lovely sunshine.
Next Week is Sports Day. This is on Thursday afternoon from 1.30pm on the school field. Please ensure that your child has all of their PE kit in school next week and please check that their plimsolls / trainers still fit.
WE WILL NOT BE SWIMMING NEXT WEEK.
In Science this week we made and tasted some Hard Tack Biscuits. These are a type of biscuit that sailors use to take with them on long journeys across the sea. We mixed together flour, water and salt to make a dough.
The dough was baked for 1 hour.
The biscuits were very hard and we could see why sailors took them on long journeys as they don't go soft!
We tasted our biscuits and then compared them to normal digestive biscuits. The biscuits we made were very salty and they made us very thirsty!
A BIG thank you to everyone who came and watched our class assembly. We had so much fun preparing for it and Mrs Garland was very impressed with our big speaking voices!
In computing this week we have been learning how to use the programmable robot toys called Bee-Bots. We experimented with them and explored all of their different functions before Mrs Garland showed us how to give them instructions using an algorithm.
We then tried directing the Bee-Bots to different locations on a Treasure Map...it was lots of fun!
PE - Our PE lessons are on a Monday and Tuesday. Please make sure your child has their PE kit in school as well as suitable footwear.
Library - We go to the Library on a Thursday. Please ensure that library books are in school.
Our topic for this term is Sun, Sea and Sand and this week we have been imagining that we are stuck on a desert island. In Computing we are learning to write our own algorithms. We turned our class carpet into a desert island and we drew symbols to show what we might find there. We then had the important job of giving Blair directions to different parts of the island.
In Science, we built shelters for life on the desert island. We made them big enough for a small bear to fit in. They had to have 4 sides to protect him from the weather. We then tested roofs made out of different materials including tin foil, baking paper, cardboard and kitchen roll. Can you guess which of these made the best roof?
