Today has been Art Day in Year 1 and we have been focusing on drawing. We began the day by drawing an elephant without any help - we weren't even allowed to look at a picture of an elephant!!
We then watched a video of some elephants and had another try at drawing a picture....we had improved so much!
After this, we followed a step-by-step guide on how to draw an elephant and then, finally, we drew a large elephant picture on black paper using white chalk.
This week we were very excited as Alby had made his own PowerPoint all about Polar Bears. We looked at it during Show and Tell and we were very impressed. Here it is!
In Science this week, we conducted an experiment to find out what were the best types of gloves to use on an expedition to the Polar Regions. We tested 4 types of gloves:
1. Rubber Washing-Up Gloves
2. Latex Disposable Gloves
3. Wollen Gloves
4. Ski Gloves
We tested them in different ways including holding ice, writing our names, doing up our coat and dipping them in water.
We have had a brilliant first week back at school. Our topic this term is the Animal Kingdom and we have already started thinking about lots of different types of animals.
In science, we learnt all about what we would need to take on a Polar Expedition. We unpacked an explorer's backpack and we even tried on some of his clothes. We used words like waterproof, insulated, fleece and windproof to describe the different materials.
Monday 18th December
On Monday, we are inviting parents/carers into our classrooms to sing Christmas songs with us. We will be decorating biscuits in the morning to share with you in the afternoon. Please join us from 2.45pm onwards.
Wednesday 20th December
Children may wear Christmas/Winter jumpers to school on Wednesday instead of their usual school jumper or cardigan. Children WILL NOT need to bring in a change of clothes for the party in the afternoon.
We are asking that all children bring in a plate of food for themselves to eat. This will not be to share with anyone. We have found that this minimises the amount of waste food. Please send in your child's party food on either a paper plate or a plastic plate clearly marked with their name. This will only need to be a small snack as the children will have had dinner as usual at lunchtime.
Yesterday was History Day in Year 1 and we spent the day learning about shops and what they were like in the past. In the morning we learnt about the different shops that people use to visit rather than going to a large supermarket. We learnt some new words such as Drapers, Grocers and Hardware.
In the afternoon we had a visit from Mr and Mrs Gudgin. They own Coddenham Stores and their family have owned the shop since 1922! They bought in lots of exciting artefacts to show us and they told us all about life in the village shop. Open up the document below to see some photos of their visit.
Thank you to everyone who came along to our Christmas Craft morning. We had a lovely time making decorations ready to sell at the Christmas Fair on the 8th of December.
You will be able to purchase your child's decorations at the fair and any profit made will go directly to our own class.
Over the past couple of weeks, we have been become much more independent in our writing. Last week we learnt about the poem The Owl and the Pussy Cat and we re-wrote it as a story. Some of us even imagined that we were the owl and wrote in the first person.
Christmas Craft Morning
Next Friday (24th) is our Christmas Craft Morning. This is an opportunity for you to come in and make some Christmas crafts with your child. These crafts will then be sold at the Christmas Fair on Friday the 8th of December.
On Monday 18th December, Year 1 will be holding a Christmas Singing afternoon in each of our classrooms. This event begins at 2.45pm and we will send out more information nearer the time.
In Maths this week we have been learning how to use number lines to help us with our addition and subtraction. We have also had a go at using empty number lines which has really challenged us but we have all learnt so much.
This week we have also tried some classroom yoga. It was based on the story of Moana. We had so much fun! Look at the different poses that we were doing. Mrs Garland has added the YouTube link below so you can try the yoga at home.
Thank you to everybody who came and watched our Harvest Assembly. We hope you enjoyed it. We loved learning all of the songs and our teachers were very proud of how well we sang on the day. We particularly enjoyed learning The Little Red Hen Rap with Mrs Jones our music teacher.
In Maths this week we have been using different equipment to help us with our addition number sentences. We have used counters, cubes, Numicon and our fingers to check our answers. Here we are using counters to find out the answers to some number sentences. We then compared the number sentences and found out which were equal, greater than or less than.
Quick Reminder - Parent's Evening is next Tuesday and Thursday. Please sign up via the school website.
