We have worked very hard this half-term in 1G. We have learnt lots of new things across a range of subjects.
In Maths this week, we have been learning about Bar Modelling. This is a method that we can use in Maths to help us understand questions better. It was developed in Singapore and we have had lots of fun experimenting with it. As you can see from these photos, we used it to help us understand fractions better and apply our knowledge to word problems.
In English this week we have continued our theme of the seaside by thinking about Deep Sea Diving. We have read the story 'Dougal The Deep-Sea Diver.' Listen to the YouTube link below to hear the start of the story - can you remember what happens next?
We have been planning our own piece of writing about being a Deep-Sea Diver. We looked at some pictures and shared ideas about what we could see.
Remember - next week is a half-term holiday and we look forward to seeing you on Monday 4th June. Have a great week!
In Maths, we have been learning all about halves and quarters. Last week, we explored halving shapes and finding half of a given amount. Today, we learnt that a quarter is one of 4 equal parts.
We drew around 2D shapes and cut them out. We then tried folding them in different ways to find halves and quarters. Some of the shapes were very tricky and we had lots of fun exploring!
This week in Maths we have been learning all about arrays. We have been using words like 'columns' and 'rows' to show different numbers with counters. From this, we have thought about the different number sentences that our counters could represent.
This afternoon we took part in a squash roadshow. We were very lucky to have two squash coaches who came and taught us some basic squash skills. We used special squash balls and rackets. We played lots of different games and it was lots of fun!
Thursday 29th March
On Thursday, parents and carers are welcome to join us in our classroom for a share session. This will be from 2.45pm until the end of the school day. We will be making a variety of puppets during the day as part of our topic and Design Technology work. There will also be the opportunity for you to see some other art work completed by the children earlier on in the term.
We look forward to seeing you then.
In Science, we are continuing to think about being Polar explorers. We have been imagining that we are on a Polar Expedition. This week Mrs Garland asked us what we would eat if we were there. We thought of lots of ideas and we soon discovered that we couldn't take any fresh fruit or vegetables!
We were given a packet of Cup A Soup and we explored this as a group. We felt it inside the packet, we smelled it, we watched it dissolve in hot water and then we tried it. We managed to identify lots of the vegetables in it and most of us liked the taste.
On Thursday we worked hard as a class to produce a new display for our classroom. We have been reading the book 'Rumble In The Jungle' and we decided to create some work based on this.
We have been learning to write sentences that include a noun, an adjective and a conjunction. We all wrote sentences about jungle animals and then wrote them in our best handwriting for the display. We completed the display by making some paper plate animal faces....Can you spot yours?
Today has been Art Day in Year 1 and we have been focusing on drawing. We began the day by drawing an elephant without any help - we weren't even allowed to look at a picture of an elephant!!
We then watched a video of some elephants and had another try at drawing a picture....we had improved so much!
After this, we followed a step-by-step guide on how to draw an elephant and then, finally, we drew a large elephant picture on black paper using white chalk.
This week we were very excited as Alby had made his own PowerPoint all about Polar Bears. We looked at it during Show and Tell and we were very impressed. Here it is!
In Science this week, we conducted an experiment to find out what were the best types of gloves to use on an expedition to the Polar Regions. We tested 4 types of gloves:
1. Rubber Washing-Up Gloves
2. Latex Disposable Gloves
3. Wollen Gloves
4. Ski Gloves
We tested them in different ways including holding ice, writing our names, doing up our coat and dipping them in water.
