To end our states of matter unit, 4B were set some challenges in which they had to think like a scientist. The children explored melting points using chocolate which did end up in their mouths. After that, we carried out two experiments. 4B had to discover why we add salt to paths in the winter and find out what Sodium Chloride (salt) does to ice? By trying to pick up ice with just a piece of string and salt in our ice pick-up experiment, we realised that when salt is mixed with ice it lowers the freezing point. Usually water freezes at 0° C, but when it is mixed with salt it lowers the freezing point significantly. That’s why we grit the roads with salt and a salt solution is used in de-icer. Everyone had a great time ice fishing. As super scientists, 4B then had fun getting messy with our corny goo challenge. We had to find out whether it was possible to walk on custard like the Brainiac’s clip we watched. Unbelievably, we found out that cornflour, which is a non-Newtonian substance, behaves like both a liquid and a solid. Wow! In the afternoon, we used our knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to create our own mini water cycles. According to 4B, it was the best day ever! Last week in Literacy, 4B explored the use of figurative language: similes, metaphors and personification. At the end of the week we used drama strategies to explore performance poetry. We listened to and watched Michael Rosen the master of performing poems. Then 4B created their own performance poetry steps to success:-
Each group was assigned a verse to learn and perform from Brian Moses’ poem ‘Walking with my iguana.’ When judging and evaluating each other’s performance, the class agreed that everyone had managed to perform their verse creatively. We hope you enjoy watching our performances.
4B enjoyed exploring profit and loss as well as looking into the cost of materials in preparation for our festive fayre. The children even produced banners and posters to advertise our class stalls for the Christmas Fayre. We created our own catchy slogans to attract customers. Some of us recorded our own radio adverts in order to promote each product as well. On Friday, 4B sold a range of products: pipe cleaner tree decorations, reindeer food and 3D snowflakes for pre-order. Santa also got in a real spin with one of our fundraising activities! We definitely have some potential candidates for ‘The Apprentice’ in the future. Any profit made will go towards organising an activity or treat for the class. Evacuation day brought history to life!
4B stepped into the shoes of their WW2 persona today as they experienced evacuation. The children were able to picture themselves in the past and empathise with evacuees as they were sent to the safety of the countryside away from the threat of bombs. Some year 4s found it quite a traumatic time being separated from their loved ones while others felt it was an exciting adventure. Thank you to the parents who were able to stay and bid farewell to the children. What an enormous effort you put into your costumes, suitcases and gas mask boxes as well! It really felt like we were transported back to the 1940s. Throughout the day, 4B were:-
I hope you enjoy the clips of 4B singing some wartime songs in order to raise morale. A few of us were feeling dreadfully homesick after being billeted out to our foster families in the countryside by ARP Warden Rix.
First of all, thank you ever so much to all the parents who gave up their time to join 4B for the Christmas craft morning. We all got into the festive spirit and the children thoroughly enjoyed creating products to sell at the Christmas Fayre. The below pipe cleaner trees will make ideal decorations for your tree. Make sure to purchase some reindeer food as well. Sprinkle it on the lawn at night and the moon will make it sparkle bright. As Santa’s reindeer fly and roam, this food will guide them to your home.
Because of the amount of people expected to attend the Christmas Fayre on Friday, the suggestion is that when you enter the building, you start in your child's classroom first. This should allow all adults to be dispersed evenly rather than the massive surge towards the school halls. Entry to the Christmas Fayre will be through the doors that the children enter each morning. Signs will indicate the doors that you enter through for Year 4. Please ensure you keep your children with you, at all times, during the fete.
