English as an Additional Language - One school, many cultures

Every year we happily welcome children from different countries with diverse experiences and backgrounds to Rushmere Hall Primary School. It is our aim to ensure that every child receives a warm welcome to our school and that they feel secure and happy, and are therefore able to achieve their fullest potential during their academic career with us.
All children with an additional language will go into their new class and be introduced to a ‘buddy’, who will walk them through a normal school day, showing them where things are, talk to them about normal school routines and introduce them to new friends. The EAL Coordinator will also stay with your child for the first few days, to ensure that the transition to their new environment is going smoothly. They will be given a ‘Welcome to your New Class’ guide and a dual language story book to borrow for reading practice at home. After a brief settling in period, your child will be given a baseline language and numeracy assessment, so that we can establish their level of knowledge and skills as well as their comprehension and use of the English language. This will be discussed with their class teacher and their progress from there will be monitored regularly with any additional needs being addressed accordingly.
Most of the support will be provided in class, but we also have 1:1 phonic sessions and extra group lessons to underpin class teaching so that we can meet your child’s educational needs and help them make progress. Our teachers at Rushmere provide quality first teaching and they aim to develop speaking, listening and understanding to ensure that all our pupils have equal access to the curriculum.
For the first month your child attends Rushmere, a progress report will be sent home on a weekly basis just to let you know that they are settling in okay. You are also very welcome to contact the EAL Coordinator with any questions you may have. We want all of our parents to feel as part of the school as their children are.
We hope that we have your support at home by maintaining a positive attitude towards using the English language, maybe by sharing reading books in English, or by just asking how their day went. Please, however do continue to use your child’s first language at home! A good foundation in their home language can help children develop other languages with more ease.
