IAt Rushmere Hall, we believe every child can succeed in mathematics, whatever their socio-economic background or prior attainment, as long as they are given the appropriate learning experiences.
We are passionate about every child achieving maths mastery. A mathematical concept or skill has been mastered when a person can represent it in multiple ways and can independently apply it to a totally new problem in an unfamiliar situation.
We want to prepare children for their future and equip them with skills for life. Children are constantly applying skills they have learned. Applying means using a skill learned in a different context. For example, if addition is being taught, this can be applied in the context of money, measure, statistics, as well as many other ways. Children are given opportunities to rigorously and frequently practise all number skills so that learning ‘sticks’ and enters their long term memory.
Objectives are covered in detail, over a long period of time to allow for a skill to be mastered. They are repeated each year to develop and build upon pupils’ knowledge, skills and understanding as they progress through the school.
