Why is MUSIC such a high priority at Rushmere Hall?
Rushmere Hall has a long history of being a school that puts the subject of music high on its list of priorities.  This makes our primary school pretty unique, at a time where music provision in education is often patchy and sadly occasionally non-existent.  We believe that music is incredibly important at all ages, and particularly in primary education.  As with PE, music provides children with different opportunities to grow, outside the more academic subjects, developing a more rounded individual.  It is a subject that needs to be taught well and regularly.   That’s why we have a specialist music teacher!

Why we value music at Rushmere Hall -
  • Music is fun!
  • Music is vital for mental well-being and promotes growth mind-set
  • Music gives opportunities for all children to shine, regardless of academic ability
  • Music teaches skills that transfer across all learning subjects
  • A love of music stays with us for life
  • Performing music for others develops
    • Courage
    • Resilience
    • Dedication
    • Teamwork
    • feelings of self-worth

At Rushmere Hall, our intent in teaching music is to provide enriching experiences and hands-on opportunities to experiment, play instruments and reflect on performance.  Children learn about their heritage, through the history of music and knowledge of music in  global cultures.  Through listening and responding physically to music, they gain self awareness, a sense of belonging and develop an emotional connection to music.  They will gain understanding of the key elements in music, and how to implement these in their own composition and performance.  They will be exposed to a wide range of different genres of music, including jazz, blues, classical, pop, world and electronic.  All children in year 4 will be taught to play a musical instrument, and learn the rudiments of reading music.  Through playing together in ensembles and performing to an audience, they learn to organise themselves and adapt to working in different situations.  Opportunities are provided for motivated and dedicated musicians to take part in workshops, perform in concerts such as the annual Schools' Festival of Music at Snape Concert Hall and hear professional musicians.

Teachers who specialise in music, teach the subject matter, through explanation, modelling, experimentation, individual, group and whole class work.  The emphasis is on the practical.  When appropriate, music links to a topic running in that term in another subject for the class.

Lessons have starter re-cap activities to reinforce previous learning.  This may take the form of quick word quizzes, rhythm games, etc.  Children listen to their own performances and that of others, commenting on how it achieves the intended outcome.  Due to the practical nature of music teaching, verbal feedback is ongoing throughout the lesson, to individuals, group and class.

Constant listening, and watching practical activities, enables teachers to help learners overcome difficulties or adapt activities to achieve success at the individual child's level.  SEND children can be grouped or partnered with children who have a better understanding of the task, in order to help them achieve success.

Through the specific WCETs (whole class instrumental lessons) teaching in year 5, children are encouraged to take their musical skills to a higher level in subsequent years, through small group Play On provision in year 6, and through small group instrumental lessons which are available to all children from years 3 to 6.  They are encouraged to take part in the twice-yearly school concerts.  Children are able to join music clubs such as ukulele, choir and the school orchestra.  We take the opportunity to perform outside of school, such as at the annual Schools’ Music Festival at the internationally renowned Snape Maltings, whenever possible.  Additionally, we apply each year for tickets to the schools’ matinee performances at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in order to give children an unforgettable experience of professional performance at the highest level.
