At Rushmere Hall, the intent of our PSHE & Citizenship is to help children to develop the personal qualities and characteristics that they need to flourish as individuals, family members and members of their communities. Our curriculum contributes to their personal development by boosting their confidence, resilience and self-esteem. It will provide them with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary for them to live healthy, safe and responsible lives and will enable them to understand the importance of making well-informed decisions regarding their careers and economic well-being. We also want our children to clarify their personal opinions, ideas and values by exploring different attitudes, ideas and values of other people, not just in Britain, but around the world. We recognise that there is a close link between our PSHE curriculum and other work we do in school such supporting our families, young carers, inclusion and promoting positive mental health.

The PSHE curriculum is designed to offer all children the opportunity to explore many different areas of PSHE & citizenship. The long term plan for each year group is divided into these different areas and some of these are revisited as the children progress through the school (such as ‘Who am I?’ and ‘Feelings and relationships’). Lessons are taught once a week and will sometimes be recorded in books but could also be a discussion based or drama lesson. As children progress through school, the curriculum areas are revisited to allow children to make links and build upon prior knowledge.

Please see our SEND page for details of how ALL subjects are adapted to meet the needs of all pupils.

Sex and Relationship Education SRE - Consultation

From September 2020, schools must deliver SRE in school. The subject is now statutory meaning all children must be taught these lessons.

The school has always delivered the statutory science content and additional sex education lessons. Parents cannot withdraw their children from the statutory content but can withdraw from the additional lessons. The additional sex education lessons is the only thing that parents can withdraw their children from.

The school will provide an opportunity for parent to view the sex education content before it is taught in the summer term. Parents can opt out at this point.

The newest statutory element and difference is that school have to teach 'relationship' education. The school has delivered this previously in Personal Social Health Education lessons. This was not statutory but will be from September 2020 onwards.

Back in March the school planned to host a consultation session with parents. This was cancelled due to the coronavirus.

The school has produced a draft policy and filmed the presentation so that parents can access the same information. There is also a form for parents to make suggestions or ask questions about policies. As a lot of this is statutory there is very little that can be changed. Questions asked will be compliled and answered in an FAQ style sheet.

In September, the school will make arrangements for parents to see the resources being used for the 'relationship' part of the curriculum if they wished to.

So... what do you need to do now? Feel free to watch the video and have a look at the policy. Feel free to make raise any questions or points using the video.

Many of you who have had children at school will not particularly notice any difference. However, because this now statutory we had to complete a consultation with parents.
