At Rushmere Hall, the intent of our Religious Education curriculum is to teach all our children about their position within the world, from a local to the global perspective. Following the Suffolk Agreed Syllabus – Emmanuel Project (Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich), the RE curriculum will open doors to an understanding of the different faiths in the wider world, whilst also deepening the children’s knowledge of, and appreciation for, the major world religions. All children will follow a course of study that explores the beliefs and values of Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam and Judaism on a bi-yearly cycle of learning. Additionally, children in Year 5, will be introduced to the religion of Buddhism and in Year 6, children will encounter the religion of Humanism. Building on prior knowledge our intent is that children will transfer this journey of learning to their long term memory. Our curriculum ensures that children have experiences of seeing and hearing from different members of our community and the faiths which enrich their lives. Children will be reflective about their learning and be confident and inquisitive with their questioning.
Religious education must be taught to all registered pupils in maintained schools, except to those withdrawn by their parents. This requirement does not apply to nursery classes in maintained schools, however at Rushmere we encourage our children to be introduced to religion from the moment they commence their learning journey with us. Religious education is a component of the basic curriculum, to be taught alongside the National Curriculum in all maintained schools.

The curriculum is designed to offer a broad and balanced curriculum to all learners. In the long term children will be exposed to all of the six major world religions. Individual lessons are based around The Emmanuel Project from the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. Lessons are taught weekly to all children from Early Years through to Year 6. Lessons follow the order of engage, enquire, explore, evaluate and express. These lessons may be recorded in class books, or could take the form of a class discussion or drama activity. Understanding is checked through a series of targeted questioning during class time, and the use of low stakes pop quizzes at the start of each lesson.
As children progress through school curriculum content is re-visited in order for children to recall previous learning and develop knowledge further. Children will experience opportunities to meet with external visitors from different cultures during World Religion Day and any other visits to places of worship available.
Please see our SEND page for details of how ALL subjects are adapted to meet the needs of all pupils.
