Great Fire of London

We are continuing our history lessons learning about The Great Fire of London. How many facts can you remember children?

• The fire started on 2nd September 1666
• It had been a long, hot summer
• The weather was windy 

• The fire started in Thomas Farriners bakery on Pudding Lane
• Luckily only 6 people died in the fire
• Terrified people escaped in wooden boats on the River Thames
• Samuel Pepys wrote a diary to record the terrible events
• The army tried to blow up houses to make a fire break to stop the fire spreading
• 87 churches were destroyed

• 13,000 houses were reduced to ash
• London had to be rebuilt
• We have learned a lot from the Great Fire - nowadays we do things very differently. Can you explain the changes that have been made?
