Space

6/3/2020

This week the children have started a new topic called Space, which has proven very popular. It's amazing how much knowledge some of the children already have.

In Literacy, the children had to label the different parts of a space rocket, with some children writing a simple sentence and including the conjunction 'and'. Other space activities this week have included drawing around circles and then colouring these in with wax crayons and then applying a coloured wash over the top to create a paint relief. These were then cut out and stuck onto black paper to resemble planets in the solar system. We also looked at the different planets of the solar system and found out that they each orbit the sun, as well as some facts about each planet. The children then completed an activity where they had to cut and stick the planets in the correct order.
In Numeracy the children have been learning about length and ordering rockets in size order. The children have then measured them using either multilink (non-standard units) or with a ruler (standard units). Another maths activity has included estimating the length of different space pictures (e.g. an astronaut or alien) and then checking their estimations using multilink. Finally they completed an activity where they had to identify pictures that were the same size, by looking closely at a selection of the same pictures of a variety of sizes.
On Thursday, it was World Book Day. The children attended a special assembly with Key Stage 1, as we had the chance to listen to a very informative story about the importance of washing hands, which is very topical at the moment! What was even more exciting, is that the book's author, Ms Maxwell, read the story! The children also had the opportunity to meet with children from Key Stage 2 who visited the classes to share their favourite books. The older children also read the younger children's favourite books to them. It was a lovely afternoon and the older children were wonderfully patient and supportive; an enjoyable time was had by all!
Congratulations to everyone that received a well done this week in the celebration assembly. Photographs will be uploaded next week.
Next week for Show and Tell, we are asking the children to bring in a photograph of them on holiday. You should all also have been contacted about providing a photograph of your child's mum or a female that they are close to. This needs to be provided for R1 and R3 by Monday of next week and for R2 by Monday 16th March. All photographs will be returned.
Have a lovely weekend everyone; let's hope it isn't a wet one again!
