We have carried on with our topic this week of Winter Celebrations by centring our learning around Bonfire Night. The children have been introduced to Guy Fawkes and why we celebrate Bonfire Night and how to keep safe during these celebrations. In the Secret Garden, they had a particularly exciting time, as they built mini bonfires with sticks (which they didn't light!) and then melted and ate marshmallows. YUM!
The children have also produced some pleasing work including number rockets, bonfire hand prints, writing words to describe a firework scene such as 'boom' and made chocolate apples. In maths they have been practising their subitising skills, which means to be able to recognise the number of objects in a small group without having to count them.
Panda class have continued to look at poems from the Rushmere Toolkit and have been amazing at learning and reciting the poem 'Cats Sleep Anywhere' by Eleanor Farjeon. I'm sure you'll agree that they had a lot to learn but did a splendid job.
Thank you to the parents that were able to attend our meeting about Reading and Phonics. I appreciate that there was a lot of information to process, but we hope that you found the session informative. Because of the poor turn-out, we are considering other ways in which we can share this information with you; we will be in touch shortly so watch this space! In the meantime, for those that were unable to attend, the power-point will be saved on the website and I would strongly suggest that you look at it, as it will help you to understand how we are now teaching phonics and reading in school. Obviously, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to speak with your child's class teacher.
A reminder also that there will be a 'live' phonics lesson taking place on Monday, which you are invited to watch. This will take place in the South Hall at 9.15am and will be conducted by Mrs Dunne with children from Year 1. Please try and attend if you are free, as it will give you a good understanding of how the phonics lessons are ran and the speed at which they go - they are quite pacey!
Congratulations to everyone who has celebrated a birthday or received a well done this week.
A reminder that next Friday is the Reception Disco. The children, if they wish, can bring in a change of clothes. They will change after lunch and the disco will run in school time from 2.30pm to 3.15pm.
For Show and Tell next week, we are asking the children to bring in something patterned. This is to link to our new topic Colourful Creatures, where we will be starting off with the lovely story of Elmer the Elephant.
For your information, please find attached the curriculum map that has been written for this module. Please remember that this is a working document and subject to change, but I thought you may find it useful to see how we plan activities for your children and what areas of the curriculum we link them to.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
