Our Intent

RHPS - EYFS: Intent

At Rushmere Hall Primary School we place great value on the development of children as individuals and providing them with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to prepare them for the challenges in Key Stage One and beyond. To do this, we have worked closely with the Year 1 team and the curriculum leads looking at the prerequisite skills needed to access the National Curriculum and have woven these into our EYFS curriculum. Our aim in the EYFS is to build strong foundations rooted in academic success as well as personal development, so that ultimately our pupils can be successful, active citizens of society and independent, curious life-long learners.

Developing Language and Communication is at the heart of our curriculum. We prioritise the development of these skills in both the Nursery and Reception classes, by creating a language rich environment with a focus on key vocabulary which is clearly displayed at activities. Our skilled staff model language through their interactions with the children and we provide small group sessions for children with a greater level of need. Following a diagnostic assessment process, our specialist Speech and Language Support Assistant delivers bespoke, one to one sessions to pupils alongside our Speech Therapist to ensure that children make rapid progress by securing those key speech and language skills.

The development of both fine and gross motor skills is vital in helping children become stronger, fitter and full of energy. They also help develop muscle strength needed in order to manipulate tools and hold a pencil. Our curriculum provides opportunities for children to develop control of the larger muscle groups in the neck, shoulder and trunk to provide core strength which are necessary to maintain stability. This in turn helps the fingers and hands to move and complete correct letter formation ready for sustained writing tasks as children move into Year One. Our curriculum provides many opportunities for children to develop these gross motor skills and also to strengthen fine motor skills including finger strength, hand eye coordination, wrist movement and grip strength.

As the children move into Reception we invest time and energy into helping pupils set and reflect on their own goals by aiming high and developing a love of reading, writing and number. Children are encouraged to see themselves as learners. We present them with tasks which provide both support and challenge and we help the children strive to improve by encouraging them to recognise when they are ready to push themselves further. Skilful adult interactions aim for not only high engagement but also high attainment. We value independence, imagination and creativity and seek to create a sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning through a vibrant continuous indoor and outdoor provision.
