At Rushmere Hall, we believe our school council will enable children to express their voice on issues and matters that are of importance to them. Through regular school council meetings children will be equipped with the ability to listen to others and respond accordingly, enhancing their interpersonal skills. The main objective of the school council is to understand key issues both within school and the local community and the role we play within them. As well as gaining confidence the children will learn that all decisions have an impact.
The School Council is designed with the purpose of children understanding their role within the school and their local community. At the start of the year we decide as a group the key issues we will focus on. From this we then arrange visitors to come in and discuss the questions that are important to us and address the issues we have raised.
As a Council we meet regularly and in our meetings we bring prior knowledge of many different areas to our discussions. For example on a recent visit from the Mayor, the children were able to draw upon history knowledge on the right to vote linking to topic work in KS2.
Being a member of the School Council enhances interpersonal skills such as communication, listening skills and organisation. It allows them an insight into different job roles , some of which may be of interest to them later on.
